The Mentawai Islands in Indonesia are indisputably the number 1 surf travel destination, loved by all our staff and all our clients for the consistency, quality and myriad of different options and setups. We are proud to represent so many quality surf charters and surf resorts in this area and send hundreds of stoked surfers there every season. Besides the world-class waves, the islands have friendly, curious locals, pristine jungle and beaches, and crystal clear waters.

However, there is another side to the Mentawai Islands. The locals are some of the poorest and most disadvantaged in Indonesia, with little provision of basic needs such as health services and education. Over the medium and long term, the people as well as the environment of this stunning area are facing massive challenges. The arrival of tourism to the islands offers a way out of the poverty cycle for locals and the opportunity to develop sustainable initiatives.

The Perfect Wave has been providing financial support and materials, as well as playing an active role in the programs at the Mentawai Education Centre and the local communities.

With the forest fires of Sumatra causing dangerously high levels of air pollution in the region, devastating regions and their wildlife, the need to create alternative sources of income through education and skill acquisition is at all time high time.

The need to increase awareness about caring for the environment IN THE LONG TERM is critical and how that can be achieved. We are talking about the situation in Sumatra and Borneo with our students and raising awareness on this issue. A Liquid Future is a non-profit humanitarian organisation which has set up free educational programmes in Environmental Awareness and Conservation for the local communities of Sipora Island, Mentawai, Indonesia. Created in response to their needs, wants and dreams in light of the arrival of land-based surf tourism in the region, the Mentawai Education Centre is sponsored and operated by The Perfect Wave.

Longer Term Aims for the Mentawai Education Centre:

To begin an “Outreach Programme” to outlying villages bringing mobile English programme to them.

• Broadcast an English class live on radio once a week to reach communities all over the Mentawais and consolidate the Outreach Programme.

• Collaborate with other organisations for expanded benefits to the local communities, particularly within medical treatment

Why is it so Important?

The Mentawais have had their own local level of government for 15 years. This government sees land based surf tourism as the main driver of economic growth and prosperity. However, without a plan for sustainable tourism the Mentawais will go the way of many other coastal areas ruined by the unmitigated explosion of tourism. The turning point is now,  for the Mentawai to have a chance of remaining the pristine, magical paradise it is for all to benefit from and enjoy.

The Mentawai Education Centre exists to ensure we help these beautiful people before disaster hits and before our western values and tourism take away their opportunity to decide their own future and environment.

The team at the Mentawai Education Centre created “Anak Pantai Mapadegat, Proyek Konservasi – Children of the Beach, Conservation Project” with 12 locals from Mapadegat age 16 to 27 years old (plus some extra little helpers) who are ambassadors for the local ocean environment and its preservation.

Currently, every Saturday, they do beach clean-ups, hand out information leaflets on the importance of disposing of rubbish responsibly, educate the younger children in the community by setting an example for them to follow, check rubbish disposal bins are emptied and generally take care of the beach and surrounding area.

Their longer term goal is to reduce the use of plastic bags within the community. We are currently liaising with the Mentawai Minister of Tourism to implement changes from a policy-making level, working towards “Mentawai Plastic Free.”

Our programme is endorsed and supported by the Mentawai Ministry of Tourism.
